A Special Day in Henefer
Months ago, I put on my campaign schedule “canvassing in Henefer” for Saturday, September 29. I knew I needed an entire day to talk to as many people as I could in a town that I honestly did not know much about.
It would turn out to be one of the most special days of the campaign.
On the very first door I knocked on, I was greeted by a woman, who told me that unfortunately I had picked a day when very few people would be home, since the majority of the town would be attending the funeral of local hero and long-time Mayor, Randy Ovard. (Obit.)
Every single person I spoke with in Henefer yesterday shared with me, many of them with tears in their eyes, stories of this man. They spoke of the way that Mr. Ovard treated his community, with a true spirit of service, and in such a humble manner. The phrase “he would give you the shirt off his back” came up more than a few times. He owned the local general store “Grumps”, and knew everyone in town.
A couple hours into my day, I had the unique experience of watching the funeral procession with a couple of locals that had just come from the funeral. I felt a bit like an interloper on a very sad and special day for this community, but it was such a unique and special experience, I am so glad I was there. I am also so thankful to the people I spoke with for sharing their stories with me, I will never forget it.
Thank you Henefer, for sharing these stories with me, and letting me experience this day.
In the words of one of your neighbors that I spoke with yesterday “For someone to serve so long, and to remain so beloved, you know you have someone really special”. Thank You to Mr. Ovard, for making such a lasting impact on people, and leaving a legacy you should really take pride in.
